My displays of Wisteria, clematis and roses are really getting going.

With spring drawing to a close, the number of tasks to get on with is increasing. If you get anxious about what needs to be done in the garden – and I certainly get daunted sometimes by the amount of work to, there is a simple method that may work to get you going.

Make a list – this is my list for my garden. Why not make your own for your own garden?

Climbers

  • Continue tying in climbers.

Creating new life

  • Divide spring-flowering perennials.
  • Thin out annuals sown earlier.
  • Sow perennials and biennials outside.
  • Harden off summer-bedding plants.

Maintaining the garden

  • Water and feed plants regularly.
  • Protect young plants from slugs and snails.
  • Clear out summer bedding
  • Beware of night frosts, which are now less likely in urban environments.
  • Hoe any empty ground.

Perennials

  • Cut back spring-flowering perennials, and stake out and support any that will need support later.

Pruning (shrubs and trees)

  • Prune: early spring flowering shrubs that have finished flowering; Clematis montana after flowering; and Pyracanthas.

Most important task

  • Sit and enjoy your garden.
