New amphibian life appears in the garden.

So, summer is truly with us and the garden is getting out of control (or so it sometimes seems). It is at this time of year that I get really anxious about what needs to be done, but there is a simple method that may work.

Make a list – this is my list for my garden. Make your own for your own.

Creating new life

  • Feed and water plants in containers.
  • Collect ripening seed from annual plants to propagate for next year.
  • Take cuttings from tender perennials, for example, pelargoniums and fuchsias.

Fruit

  • Water and feed tomatoes regularly, and remove yellowing leaves.
  • Harvest first apples and pears.

Maintaining the garden

  • Plant new strawberry plants and water in well.
  • Continue weeding borders.
  • Minimise slug and snail damage.

Perennials

  • Cut back perennials that are getting out of control.

Pruning (shrubs and trees)

  • Trim hedges.
  • Prune rambling roses after flowering.
  • Trim lavender, but only after flowering.

Most important task

  • Make sure that birds and other wildlife have fresh water, so you can watch them and it while sitting and enjoying your garden.
